Dear Rick,

Happy New Year!

Ah, January.  The time for resolutions, dieting and gym parking lots so packed that you can get your cardio in just making the trek to the front door. 

Did you make it through the holidays with the same body you came into November with?  If yes, congratulations!  You have accomplished something pretty special and are the envy of your friends.  No you say, well, join the crowd.  With a multitude of reasons to celebrate (which oh so often includes too much food and drink) and so much to get done, December can feel like one glutenous string of eating events and shopping extravaganzas.  

That brings us to January.  The good news is that just about everyone you know is watching what they eat and making time for exercise.  This makes us 'healthy folk' look a lot more normal.  

Embrace the season and start with a practice that while cliché, may be the single most important thing you can do to start the season off right.  SET SOME GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR.  You can even call them resolutions if you would like - just take out a piece of paper and write down things you want to accomplish in the next few weeks, next few months and this year.  The simple act of putting those goals on paper holds you accountable and makes it much more likely that they will happen.
