Greetings,

Welcome to the New Year's edition of my Newsletter!
Julie Lohre IFBB Pro
Happy New Year!  I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends!  This year was very special because I was able to experience Christmas through the eyes of our 5 year old son, Tre.  They are few things better in the world than waking up Christmas morning with a little boy standing by your bed, eyes wide, smiling from ear to ear because Santa came!  Speaking of which, Santa was very good to me.   In addition to some wonderful presents, I received an invitation to the most prestigious fitness contest in the world, the Fitness International at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, OH!  Competing at the Arnold has been a goal of mine for years and knowing that I am considered amongst the top 12 competitors in the world is just amazing.  I have already begun working hard to make this my best show yet.

While the Holidays were fun, I am truly relieved that the constant temptation of cookies, parties and hearty foods are soon to be a thing of the past.  I had a few cheats over the last few weeks and if nothing else, they made me appreciate how good I feel when I eat clean.  Let's resolve to make Jan the month we get back on track and make significant progress toward our nutritional goals.  You really can reach your fitness goals - you just have to set your mind to it.

Wishing you a Healthy, Happy and Fit New Year!
Julie

How to make an effective "New Years Resolution"

From: Rick Lohre
6 Practical Tips to help you make your Resolution "Stick"

  • Avoid choosing a resolution that you've not had success with in the past.  Chosing a resolution that you have had previous failures or difficulties attaining will only add to your sense of frustration.

If you really want to make a resolution that you have in the past, change it slightly to make sure you don't come up with the same results you have in the past.

Example: Deciding that you want to compete and win your first show might be a lofty goal if you have never competed before.  Make a resolution to come in your absolute best to your first show, to learn the most you can from each competition and better your last placing.  Realizing that every show is a stepping stone will allow you to have longer lasting more actionable goals.
  • Chose attainable goals.  Often when we make resolutions, they are far too difficult or lofty, leading to disappointment and frustration.

Instead of resolving to lose 40 lbs by summer, commit yourself to a different resolution that will help you attain the previous...perhaps making a resolution to journal your meals and slowly alter poor eating habits. This slow but steady change in your behavior will allow you to still realize your goals, but perhaps on a different, more reasonable timeframe.  Evaluate your goals on a monthly basis and when you've had success with one, add or adapt to another.  By committing to a monthly goal, you are more likely to build an attitude of change.
  • WRITE IT DOWN!  Building a game plan is most effective when you have a concrete set of plans.  When you build a house, you start with a detailed drawing of what you want to acheive.

When you are able to see the final outcome it is much easier to follow the plans you set out.  A builder does not simply start laying the framework without knowing how large the house will be.  If you set a goal and don't write it down, you are more likely to change it to make it easier or more attainable.  Having it written down forces you to acknowledge your committment and holds you accountable.
  • Break it down.  While writing your goal down will help you see the big picture, breaking it down will allow you to create a simple set of plans that build on each other to attain your final goal.  Having steps to attain your goal allows you a path to follow that prevents straying from the main plan.

This way, even if you do not make your final goal, you will have had multiple smaller successes to look back on.
  • Reward yourself for completing a step or milestone.  But be careful to not undermine your goals.  If you are trying to lose weight you might want to make your reward, non food related.  You might instead treat yourself to a special spa treatment or new outfit.

Small treats for your committment, other than the goal itself, are often necessary to reinforce your behavioral changes and successes.
  • Give yourself time.  It is difficult to make immediate changes to any behavior.  Stick with it and realize that it takes 21 days to create a habit.  Often times it can take up to 4 or 5 months to incorporate it as a part of your daily life.
