Dear Subscriber,
There maybe a chill in the air, but it will be no time before the contest season begins and we shed our fluffy winter coats for beautiful sequenced figure suits! The Arnold Sports Festival will kick off the Spring Contest season on Feb 29th - Leap Day! This is so much more than a show...it is a fitness extravaganza. If you are looking for some serious motivation, make your way to Columbus, Ohio for this incredible weekend. I personally am extremely excited because I will be competing there for the first time ever. Yes, after 3 years as an IFBB Fitness pro, I get the honor of competing with 11 other of the best Fitness competitors in the world. Wish me luck! If you will not be able to make it to Ohio, be sure to check out www.BodyBuilding.com for LIVE coverage of the events. Right after the Arnold comes the Team FitBody photo shoots followed by the NPC Northern Kentucky Bodybuilding and Figure show - the biggest NPC event in our area. My Spring Contest Prep team has been working hard and making incredible progress over the last several months. They are in the home stretch now! Stay strong ladies, all of your hard work will be paying off very soon. This spring is your chance to make serious progress toward your goals. Take advantage of the extra space in both your gym's parking lot and the cardio equipment now that the January rush of New Year's resolutioners has past. Re-new your own resolve to reach your goals and don't let anything hold you back. It is easy to commit to something for a few weeks, but do you have what it takes to stay focused when time gets tight and the drive thru would be a quick dinner solution? Don't be NORMAL. Don't quit and find excuses to avoid eating clean and exercising when it gets tough. YOU are worth the extra effort. And for those of you that have a burning desire to compete, let this be the year you make your dreams come true. The view FROM the stage, knowing what it took you to get there, is amazing. Go follow your dreams! I am excited to be making mine come true in 9 days. Yours in Fitness, Julie :) |
| Client Spotlight | Angie Gustafson This month I am excited to profile a woman that I have had the pleasure of working with in my online training program AND was able to meet in person at my Winter Boot Camp. In her 8 week online training, Angie has lost more than 11 lbs and approximately 6% bodyfat going from about 19% bodyfat down to 13%. Angie has worked incredibly hard and is preparing for her first Figure show this spring. Look for her to be bringing home several trophies with this type of determination. Congratulations Angie!

Shawna Dodson Shawna is an incredible woman that has many roles! She is a mother of 2 beautiful girls, a successful personal trainer and aerobics instructor, loving wife and a full time student. Talk about a busy woman! Since beginning our training program together 6 months ago, she has transformed her body and lost an incredible 38 lbs and 10% bodyfat. Shawna's progress has been the best kind - steady over time which is a sure sign that she will be able to maintain what she worked so hard for!

Figure & Fitness FitBody Camp Report: What an incredible weekend! I just want to say THANK YOU to all of the women that attended and made this weekend one I will remember forever. There were 14 women participating ranging from those prepaing for their first show sometime this year to National level competitors ready to take it to the next level. With seminars on everything from posing to training and dieting and photo shoots to a full Mock Competition on stage, everyone learned something new and became a better competitor. We had so much fun sweating and laughing together - you all have energized me and helped me gain the focus I need to push through my final weeks to the Arnold. Each woman brought something of herself to the camp and made it truly special. I am honored to have been able to work with each of you and want you to know that I feel like a better competitor myself after what we shared this weekend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I CANNOT wait to do it again. Here is what one of the women had to say about this weekend: "I just wanted to let you know that I had a great time this past weekend. I learned so much and just wish I had done something like this prior to my first show. It would have helped tremendously, especially in knowing what to expect. The camp was not only excellent for gaining information on the competitions and what the judges are looking for in a competitor, but in meeting other women that share similar goals. The informal time of dinner and lunch was just as beneficial to me as the more structured content. Your input has been extremely valuable, and hopefully, I can reach my personal goals. You have a wonderful personality and a lovely family. I wish you all the luck at the Arnold. We will be pulling for you here in Charleston, WV! "-Amanda (Mandy) Eads

Rick takes the questions this month :) This months questions are from two FITBODY Camp attendees after my seminar on "What it takes to be a Fitness Model"
Q. I feel like I've got a marketable look for the fitness industry, but I don't want to compete. Will that be an obstacle?
A. YES and NO. The answer is not quite as simple as a direct yes or no. If you do compete, chances are that you are much more likely to gain the exposure in the industry.
However, that does not mean that all models are discovered or "scouted" from fitness/figure competitions.
If you do not compete, you'll need to spend time in some other way to gain name recognition and make contact with industry professionals involved in publications.
Competing by no means gives you the "in" that you need to become a model. It is just one way to gain exposure.
Q. If I do compete and win my class a large show, what can I expect in the way of photoshoots and offers?
A. There are no special considerations for being the winner of a class or the overall for that matter at a show.
While you may get offers if you win or place well, it does not automatically mean that your look will appeal to a publication or photographer. Sometimes the most marketable model is not the overall winner or class winner.
Your placing on stage is a matter of judging for one particular goal, looking the best on stage. This does not mean that look is necessarily what magazines or photographers are looking for. Sometimes the two align well, but other times they do not.
Part of the equation has to do with the publication or audience for your images. You will not see women who are ultra ripped and hard in Oxygen. That's not to say women who have competed in that condition have not appeared in that publication, just not in that particular condition. So, your stage appearance is not directly related to your ability to get an offer for a shoot though it does gain you additional exposure.
